  1. Medians and Altitude Chapter 5 Section 4

  2. Objective • Students will identify properties of medians and altitudes of a triangle.

  3. Median of a Triangle • A segment whose endpoints are a vertex and the midpoint of the opposite side.

  4. Concurrency of Medians Theorem (5-8) • The medians of a triangle are concurrent at a point that is 2/3 the distance from each vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side (median).

  5. Centroid of a Triangle • The point of concurrency of the medians. • Also called the center of gravity of a triangle.

  6. Turn to Page 310… • Look at Problem 1 • Try the “Got It” problem of Problem 1 on your own.

  7. Altitude of a Triangle • A perpendicular segment from a vertex of a triangle to the opposite side.

  8. Concurrency of Altitudes Theorem (5-9) • The lines that contain the altitudes of a triangle are concurrent

  9. Orthocenter • The point of concurrency of the Altitudes of a triangle. • Can be inside, on, or outside of the triangle. • Acute triangle = inside • Obtuse triangle = outside • Right triangle = on the triangle

  10. Turn to Page 312… • Look at the Concept Summary box at the top of the page • Check your chart

  11. On page 112…. • Try # 1-7 on your own.

  12. Exit Slip • What is an Orthocenter? • What is a Centroid? • What is an Incenter? • What is a Circumcenter? • What is the Concurrency of Medians Theorem?
