  3. Background to TCM • TCM been practiced for 4000 years (currently 2 billion people practice TCM) • Culture & Science (some debate) • Whole body model concept (not a ‘’one pill per ill’’ model, western approach) • Four basic elements (acupuncture, diet, massage & herbs) Company Logo

  4. TCM Modernisation Issues: • Identification, validation and authentication • Farming, herbal sources, processing, quality assurance/distribution issues • Health & safety • Legislation/risk assessment • Government/professional bodies • Practitioners/professional status/acceptability Company Logo

  5. TCM/Why modernisation? • Expanding world market in TCM products • Natural/green drug alternative • UK/USA; 20% drugs sold are from natural sources (expanding consumer demand) • UK – market now worth £170k/rising to £200k by 2010 • Growing international support (WHO, EU, medical charities, US/NIH funding) Company Logo

  6. TCM/Chinese Government • PR China investing $5-6 billion worldwide in TCM • Recent EU/UK trade & economic (including health)links/agreements • Beijing International declaration on TCM (December 2007) • Developing a rapid modernisation program (national centres/Shanghai) • Engaging in isolating/characterising medically active compounds Company Logo

  7. HYPERTENSION/UK PROSPECTIVE Some Factors: • High salt concentrations (processed foods, pressure on food industry) • Obesity (fears/50% population obese in 10 years especially in the young) • Race (e.g.Asian women type 2 diabetes and hypertension) • Current health intervention strategies (unsuccessful/need addressing) • HTA conference covering these points Company Logo

  10. Death due to hypertension ( heart failure, renal failure, cerebral infarction, coronary heart disease ) 42.5% Hypertension Number of fatality Hypertension is poorly controlled Company Logo

  11. Two types of high blood pressure Most common (90%) and dangerous essential (primary) hypertension Hypertension secondary hypertension Treatable or reversible Company Logo

  12. Conventional and TCM therapy of hypertension Conventional therapy principle TCM therapy principle 1.Global and dialectical treatment 2. multi-routes, multi-links, multi-targets 3. Safe and no drug dependency 1. Beta-blockers 2. Diuretics 3. ACE inhibitors 4. Calcium-channel blockers Company Logo

  13. Part two —— Categorization of Anti-hypertension Herbs Company Logo

  14. Categorization of antihypertension herbs • TCM considered hypertension to be liver-fire ascending and Yin-Deficiency with Shenic-Yang syndrome • So herbs calming the liver and subdue yang, activating blood circulation that dissipates blood stasis, eliminating humid heat so relief is applied Company Logo

  15. Categorization of antihypertension herbs • Diaphoresis relieving superficies:Radix Puerariae, Rhizoma cimicifugae, Florists Chrysanthemum. • Heat-clearing herbs:Spica prunellae, Sophora flavescens Ait, Semen Cassiae. • Catarrhectic herbs: Radix et rhizoma rhei. • Activating blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis herbs:Salvia miltiorrhiza, Flos Carthami. • Anastaltic herbs:Panax Notoginseng. • Rheumatism herbs:Radix stephaniae tetrandrae, Araliafargesii Franch. • Removing dampness and promoting diuresis herbs:Rhizoma alismatis. • Dissipate phlegm and relieving cough and asthma herbs: mori Cortex. • Dispelling internal cold herbs:Fructus Evodiae.
