  4. 1683: Seiur de La Salle • Explored lower Mississippi • Named river valley “Louisiana” • 1763: Pierre Laclede & Auguste Chouteau • Founded St. Louis (fur trade outpost) • 1760: New France pop. = 65,000 (WHY?) • Main economic activity?
