  2. The story • The book of Daniel states that the king of Babylon, threw a banquet to praise the gods of silver, gold, bronze, wood, iron, and stone. Suddenly, a human hand appeared and wrote mysterious words on the wall. The words were “mene, mene, tekel, upharsin” That night the king died. The words meant “imminent doom of misfortune” and “the future is predetermined”

  3. Now we just use the term “handwriting on the wall” to indicate that something bad is going to happen. • Ex. Tanisha was startled when Juan broke up with her. Rosie said she would have seen the handwriting on the wall when he got arrested for silly shenanigans.
