  2. No Warm Up Today • Please have your focus questions and a pen ready to write. • We will not answer all questions; I will tell you which to focus on. • For 5th-8th period, we will finish Archetype Notes on Thursday.

  4. Clip One: Questions 1a-1b • 1a. Who is Harry Potter? • A boy who doesn’t know he’s a wizard. • 1b. What archetypes does he fit? • Hero: • Rescued baby (Hagrid/Dumbledore) • Foster parents (Dursleys) • Humble life (non-magic world) • Return to kingdom as adult to solve problems (Goes to Hogwarts, stops Voldemort) • ***Note: For the purposes of this class, these are the things that define a hero!

  5. Clip Two: Question 6 • 6. What is the magic weapon? • His skin: • Only the hero can use it • No one else can use his skin :D • Shows his special ability • Reason Voldemort can’t beat him • Given by a mentor • His mother’s love • Note: These 3 things define “the magic weapon”

  6. Clip Two: Question 8 • 8. What is Harry’s unhealable wound? • His scar • Never heals • Looks the same 11 yrs later • Always aches/drives action • Burns Harry • Warning sign Note: These 2 qualities define an unhealable wound!

  7. Clip Two: Question 9 • 9. Who are Harry’s Loyal Retainers? • Ron and Hermione • Protect Hero • Hermione gets him out of Devil’s Snare • Ron helps him win wizard’s chess • Servant-like • Ron sacrifices himself • Hermione listens to his commands Note: These two qualities define Loyal Retainers.

  8. Clip Two: Question 10 • 10. What is Harry’s quest in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone? • The main goal • Keep the Stone away from Voldemort

  9. Clip Two: Question 11 • 11. List several tasks must Harry accomplish in achieving his quest: • Tasks (mini-quests) • Get past Fluffy • Get untangled from Devil’s Snare • Catch the winged key • Win wizard’s chess • Find the sorcerer’s stone

  10. Clip Two: Question 12abc • 12a.Who is Voldemort? • An evil parasitic wizard. • 12b.What is his connection to Harry? • Killed Harry’s parents • Gave Harry the scar • 12c. Why does he want the sorcerer’s stone? • To come back to life

  11. Clip Two: Question 13ab • 13a. Does Harry accomplish his quest in this film? • Yes, he protects the stone. • 13b.If yes, discuss how. • The stone is given to Harry b/c he wants it but won’t use it. • He then burns Prof. Quirrell • V. doesn’t have a host; takes off.

  12. Tomorrow: Short Answers • Be prepared to explain in paragraph form: • Why Harry fits the “hero” archetype. • Why Ron and Hermione fit the “loyal retainer” archetype. • Why Harry’s scar fits the “unhealable wound” archetype. Basically, write about what we talked today but explain in paragraph form and add any details YOU noticed. You HAVE to refer to the definitions given.
