  1. Commanded to Love

  2. Agape Agape (active good will) • Agape is the term that defines God's immeasurable, incomparable love for humankind • It is his ongoing, outgoing, self-sacrificing concern for lost and fallen people • God gives this love without condition, unreservedly to those who are undeserving and inferior to himself • Agape love is much more than a feeling or sentiment. Agape love is active. It demonstrates love through actions

  3. Philio Phileo (fondness, friendship) • The Greek verb philéō is closely related to the noun philia • Both philia and phileo originate from the Greek term phílos, meaning "beloved, dear ... a friend; someone dearly loved in a personal, intimate way; a trusted confidant held dear in a close bond of personal affection." • Philos expresses experience-based love

  4. GOD AND JESUS... Mark 12: 28- 30 28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. B. THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY... our neighbour - Mark 12:31 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” WE ARE COMMANDED TO LOVE …

  5. C. THOSE IN OUR FAMILIES... Ephesians 5:25-29 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansingher by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— Titus 2:4 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, D. THOSE IN THE CHURCH... John 13:34-35 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” WE ARE COMMANDED TO LOVE …

  6. 1. God a. Concerning brotherly love (Philia) to love one another (Agape) – 1 Thessalonians 4:9 9 Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. b. How He sent His Son – 1 John 4:9-10 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. WE ARE TAUGHT HOW TO LOVE …

  7. 2. Jesus a. How He was willing to die for us - 1 John 3:16 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. b. How He loved (Agape and Phileo) His disciples – John 13:1,34 (the disciples); John 13:23; 20:2 (John) John 13:34 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. WE ARE TAUGHT HOW TO LOVE …

  8. 3. Paul & Peter a. Thought Christians how to walk in Love b. Practice brother love c. Thought families to love one another Philippians 4:1 1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends! 1 Peter 1:22 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. WE ARE TAUGHT HOW TO LOVE …

  9. 4. Other Christians a. Older women can teach the younger women – Titus 2:3-4 3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children. b. Even young Christians can set an example of how to love - 1 Timothy 4:12 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 2 Thessalonians 1:3 3 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing. WE ARE TAUGHT HOW TO LOVE …

  10. 1. Phileo love can be enhanced by adding agape love to it – 2 Peter 1:5-7 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.   2. Display active good will (Agape), and heartfelt affection (Phileo) will follow – 1 Thessalonians 4:9 9 Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. WE CAN DEVELOP HEARTFELT AFFECTION...

  11. We cannot excuse the lack of heartfelt love toward Jesus, our brethren, or our families... Where we lack a heartfelt love toward Jesus, our brethren, our family members... a. We need to acknowledge the deficiency (as a sign of spiritual immaturity) b. We need to be willing to relearn love (whether it be agape or phileo) When we need to learn how to love others with a heartfelt love... a. Look to the examples of the Father, Jesus, the apostles, and other Christians b. Take the initiative to practice agape love, and phileo love will develop naturally Do we love one another fervently as we should...? In conclusion …
