Solving Multi-Step/Distributive Equations

a (b + c) = ab + ac

5 (3 + 7) = 5(3) + 5(7)

= 15 + 35

= 50

Remember that distributive property is about sharing.

- Solve
5y + 2(y – 3) = 22

5y + 2y – 2(3)= 22

5y + 2y – 6 = 22

7y – 6 = 22

7y + 0 = 28

7y = 28

y = 4

- 1st – Do the distributive Property
- 2nd – Combine family
- 3rd – Solve for x
- eliminate (+/-)
- eliminate (x/division)

5m + 3(m+ 5) = 31

6y + 5(2y – 4) = 12

2x + 2(2x – 5) = 38

a + 3(4a + 12) = 75

3b + 2(b + 7) = 69

Practices

m= 2

y= 2

x= 8

a= 3

b = 11

- Solve
13= 4(3x – 7) + 5

13 = 4(3x) – 4(7) + 5

13 = 12x – 28 + 5

13 = 12x – 23

36 = 12x + 0

36 = 12x

3=x or x=3

- 1st – Do the distributive Property
- 2nd – Combine family
- 3rd – Solve for x
- eliminate (+/-)
- eliminate (x/division)
