  4. Background Information • The Empire StateBuilding • a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York City at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York.

  5. The Empire State Building • It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in New York City and New York State.

  6. World Trade Center • World Trade Center( WTC or Twin Towers) • a complex in Lower Manhattan, the heart of New York City's downtown financial district and contained 13.4 million square feet of office space. • It was designed by Minoru Yamasaki in the early 1960s using a tube-frame structural design for the twin 110-story towers. The North Tower was completed in December 1970 and the South Tower in July 1971.

  7. World Trade Center • Its seven buildings were destroyed in 2001 in the September 11 attacks. The site is currently being rebuilt with six new skyscrapers and a memorial to the casualties of the attacks.

John Hancock Center • John Hancock Center (“Big John”) at 875 North Michigan Avenue in the Streeterville area of the Near North Side in Chicago, Illinois, is a 100-story, 1,127-foot tall skyscraper designed by structural engineer Fazlur Khan of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. When completed in 1969,it was the tallest building in the world outside New York City.

John Hancock Center • It is currently the fourth-tallest building in Chicago and the sixth-tallest in the United States, after the Sears Tower, the Empire State Building, the Bank of America Tower, the Trump Tower, and the Aon Center. When measured to the top of its antenna masts, it stands at 1,506 feet.

  34. Background Notes • New Orleans: New Orleans, located in Southeastern Louisiana along the Mississippi River, is a major port city and historically the largest city in Louisiana. The city is one of North America’s most distinctive and culturally diverse cities and has been a leading commercial center since its founding. Since World War II, the city’s rich cultural heritage has contributed to its emergence as a major international tourist center.

  35. Background Notes • Hurricane Katrina: Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. It was the sixth-strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the third-strongest hurricane on record that made landfall in the United States. Katrina formed on August 23 during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and caused devastation along much of the north-central Gulf Coast of the United States.
