Objectives: What you will be able to do after today’s lesson… • To diagram root words and expand your vocabulary. • To communicate and discuss your understanding of the research process, and in doing so, expand and build upon your prior knowledge. • To read and comprehend the plot, characterization, and themes within our class novel, The Giver.

  5. But WHY???? • We’re getting ready for the war (CST). Remember, you may have lost some of the battles (benchmarks), but you will win the war (CST)!!!! • Learning root words can help you expand your vocabulary without really having to learn 100’s of words. You can break down the roots within a word and make an educated guess on its meaning. • You will be writing a research paper in 8th grade, probably more than one a year in high school, and definitely in college!! Understanding the process of writing a research paper will make writing it a lot easier. • Breaking down the plot, characterization, and themes within a story will help you understand and comprehend what you are reading while also making you a better reader.

  6. Page28R-Root Diagrams • Root: BIO- • Meaning: life • Examples: biography, autobiography • Root: TRI- • Meaning: three • Examples: tricycle, triangle • Root: CHRON- • Meaning: time • Examples: chronology, chronic

  7. 28R-L – Root Diagram--Assignment: Working with a partner you will have 20 minutes to chart out the roots CHRON-, TRI- and BIO---Use a dictionary to help you find words that contain your root.

Helping Quartet • Read over the thinking questions. • Take 5-7 minutes to answer the thinking questions on your own. • As you are answering the thinking questions, I will walk around and assign you as an A, B, C, or D person. • Person A will have 60 seconds to share his or her answers while Persons B, C, and D are taking notes on what Person A is saying. • Next, Person B will share and Persons A, C, and D will take notes. • Person C will share next. • Person D will share last. • You will have 60 more seconds to ask any a question about what they said and clarify your notes. • Last Once everyone has shared, you will answer the questions on the back independently. We will share your new knowledge on the research process as a class.

Helping Quartet Expectations… • When Person A (B, C, or D) is talking, there should not be any other talking from the quartet. • Person A (B, C, or D) must talk for the entire 60 seconds. • When it is not your turn to share, you will write down notes on what Person A (B, C, or D) is saying, especially if it is something that you did not fully understand. You also want to add notes on ideas that go beyond what you previously thought. • The name of this activity is HELPING quartet, so purpose is it help one another and expand your understanding of the research process. • Make certain that you are being respectful towards your classmates by not interrupting them and paying attention to them when they are talking.

  10. Research Process (29R) 1) Research? When you look up info about a topic that you don’t know; an informational, detailed essay 2) Importance of questions? Reminds you what you are looking for; helps organize the essay; questions = topics 3) What do you need? Resources; outlining/ pre-writing; topic/ main idea 4) Avoiding plagiarism… in-text citations; giving credit to the author; don’t copy and paste; bibliography 5) Organizing your research essay… outlining; transitioning from 1 paragraph to the next; separate the topics; start general/broad info  move to specific details 6) Why learn about research? Know how to look up info; research in 8th grade, high school, and college 7) Purpose? To learn something new/ more about a topic; so you know how to conduct research
