  1. Force and Motion • This is a StAIR project designed for Ms. Collier’s 3rd grade class. You will be working through the slides and answering the questions in yellow on your own. You will complete quiz questions throughout the StAIR. Your goal is to discover what “motion” and “force” are and how they affect us everyday. • Click anywhere to start. • Have fun, Scientists!

  2. Objective • P.FM.E.3- A force is either a push or a pull. The motion of objects can be changed by forces. The size of the change is related to the size of the force. The change is also related to the mass of the object on which the force is being exerted. When an object does not move in response to a force, it is because the environment is applying another force.

  7. What is force? • Force is a push or pull needed to start an object moving. • Think about a door. The door will stay in the same place unless something like your hand or the wind pushes or pulls it closed.

  10. Correct! • No, an ant isn’t strong enough to move a brick. For an object to move, the amount of force has to be strong enough to move it. • Continue to learn more about motion!

  11. Describing Motion • Now that we know what motion is and force causes motion, let’s talk about how to describe it! • You can describe motion with 3 types of words: • Type of motion • Speed • Direction

  12. Type of Motion Words • These words describe what kind of motion it is: • running • jumping • skiing • climbing

  13. Speed Words • These words describe the speed of the motion: • fast • quick • slow • rapidly

  14. Direction Words • These words describe the direction of the motion: • left • up • sideways • north
