  1. GEOSUMMIT: 2010 Synthesized Science Priorities, Requirements & Impacts March 18, 2010

  2. Priorities, Requirements & Impacts • Priorities • Survey Results • Requirements • Trends • Snapshot of 2010 • Long Range Planning tool • Impacts • Highest Impact Areas for Support • Snapshot of 2010 • Proposal Assistance tool

  3. Priorities: Survey Results • 5 Questions… • Year-Round v. Campaign • Motivations for Choosing Summit • Top Priorities for Development • Logistics Lead Time • 36 Respondents • 60/40 mix Year-Round/Campaign • 50/50 mix Funded/Proposed

  4. Motivation for Working at Summit science community response

  5. Priorities for Development high low priority

  6. What facility, infrastructure or logistics upgrade to Summit Station would be most beneficial to your work? Examples… “Having a facility that is efficient and reducing the overall logistical support would be ideal…” “For our long term research, we prefer that Summit stay relatively small with as small a footprint on the local environment…” 23 responses 6 requests for pollution reduction

  7. Additional Feedback… “More ANG flights in and out for easier facilitation of research schedules.” “Modernized modular facilities.” “Permanent snowpack and flux research facility.” “Maintaining at least 2 over-snow vehicles capable of traveling long distances (100-200 km), spending one or more nights without electrical power, and then starting up again to return home.”

  8. Lead Times for Shipping science community response

  9. Survey: Conclusions • Community has multi-faceted & broadly integrated reasons for working at Summit • Priorities emphasize ease of access for people & cargo, minimized fuel/pollution footprint, operationally efficient facilities • Much of community can tolerate longer lead times for shipment

  10. Requirements • User Days • Trends • Trends by Funding Agency • 2010 Population • Airlift • Space • Power

  11. Science User Days: Trends Summit Science User Days

  12. Science User Days: Trends Summit Science User Days

  13. Requirements: 2010 Population Summit User Days

  14. Requirements: 2010 Airlift - Summit 2010 Airlift - Field Season: April 23 – August 20 2010 Goal: 22 Flights Science Requirement = 89,000 lbs Science Capacity = 119,500 lbs

  15. Requirements: Space

  16. Requirements: 2010 Space total 2010 space usage = 1910 sq ft

  17. Requirements: Power Power Sources: Diesel Generator / Wind Turbine Maximum Capacity: 110 kW Peak Coincident Operational Load: 35 kW 2010 Science Connected Load: 33.6 kW

  18. Requirements: 2010 Power 2010 Science Connected Load = 33.6 kW

  19. Impact of Requirements • Integrated in Proposal Estimate process to identify high impact work early in planning process. • Create an integrated view for rating the relative impacts of different projects • Gage how close station is to “red line” on those requirements

  20. 5 Impact Criteria: Methodology • Annual User Days • Year-Round Support • Infrastructure • Airlift • Power

  21. Impact Snapshot for 2010

  22. How Close to Red Line?

  23. Impact Conclusions • Simplistic model captures most dramatic features, but not a perfect model. • Station past “red line” on winter tech support. User days & Airlift are growing concerns. • Difficult to capture impact of major facility renovations.

  24. After a break… Near & Long Range Planning • Purpose of Long Range & Master Planning • Planning tools in current use • Tools and resources in development Thank You…
