  1. 10.2 Big Bang Theory By Sunny and Austin

  2. 10.1 The big bang theory By the end of section 10.1 you should be able to understand the following: How Edwin Hubble helped astronomers tracing the paths of movement backwards What is cosmic background radiation That microwave radiation causes cosmic background radiation

  3. Hubble’s Observation Edwin Powell Hubble • Hubble’s observed the galaxies moving away from one another • Approximately 13.7billion years ago there was an unimaginably tiny volume of space • space rapidly expanded to an immense size • Big bang theory isn’t the only theory about how the universe formed

  4. That catastrophic event First described by a Belgian priest and physicist Georges Lemaitre in 1927 Known as the Big Bang Theory

  5. Cosmic Background Radiation Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson • Two American astronomers Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson made a discovery that is a important piece of evidence • Arno and Robert were monitoring microwave radiation in space

  6. Cosmic Background Radiation (cont.) This is the radiations that scientists believe is left over the big bang expansion. The red area’s indicate the period of slightly hotter temperatures. The blue area’s are the periods that have slightly cooler temperatures. • Arno and Robert kept hearing background noises they made several adjustments • After they found out they were detecting cosmic background radiation

  7. Big Bang explosion example Video of Big Bang Theory

  8. Additional supporting evidence Satellite by NASA important piece of evidence by the cosmic background explorer(COBE) The satellite was launched in 1989 Launched by the National Aeronautics

  9. Additional supporting evidence (cont.) 2001, another spacecraft sent To gather more information about cosmic background radiation Called Wilkinson Microwave Anistrophy Probe (WMAP) Was able to get more precise measurement than have been ever made.

  10. Questions • Who first describe the big bang theory, he is also a Belgian priest and physicist? • Who were the two astronomers who made discovery which was the important piece of evidence?

  11. What does COBE stands for? • What does WMAP stands for? • Discuss what is big bang theory?

  12. Answers Georges Lemaitre Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson Cosmic Background Explorer Wilkson Microwave Anistrophy Probe

  13. Answers cont. 5. Due to the very short time, all the matter and energy expanded in the universe was formed, that catastrophic event was called Big Bang Theory.
