The v’s of Big Data • Volume – talking petabytes, or at least 100s terabytes. • Variety – Can be structured or unstructured or a a mixture. • Velocity – A big driver: need iterations in O(day). • Veracity – Accuracy… “dirty-data” is common but harder to handle. • Value – What is the information worth? Very much a driver of the technology. • Four paradigms of science? • 1st– Observation and Experimentation • 2nd – Analytical or Theoretical methods • 3rd – Computational or Simulation driven discovery • 4th – Data-driven discovery. GridPP30

Very much a driver of the technology. Yes and no; just like the cloud. Message is we can contribute and, as a funding concept, we should try and make better use than we did of cloud. We are responding (rather late now – but constrained by funding cycle) to Cloud but Big-Data is perhaps a bigger mindset... GridPP30

  14. GridPP31 Theme: GridPP5 Purely operational or some element of development? 2. Technical implementation: What would the GridPP5 Grid look like? 3. Political instantiation of the grid? 4. Boundary services: NGI/EGI APEL, CA, VOMS, and network? 5. Currently a big push in the UK to join-up the computing ecosystem (including HPC) – this needed to be an energy efficient computing ecosystem. We could not submit a bid in isolation… 6.
