  5. Canada’s Time Zones Find the six different blue colours-one per zone. (Ignore yellow and dark purple). The lines of longitude have been adjusted. Why?

  6. Why countries adjust their time zone boundary lines • To avoid passing through a city • To go around physical features such as a mountain that naturally divide an area • To make all of a province be in the same time zone

  7. World Time Zones

  8. Daylight Savings • advance clocks one hour so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less • clocks are adjusted forward one hour in spring and are adjusted backward in fall. • modern daylight savings time (DST) was first proposed in 1907

  9. DST- Pros and Cons • adds daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that use sunlight after working hours, • causes problems for farming, entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun because less light in the morning • an early goal was to reduce evening usage of electric power for lighting • complicates timekeeping and can disrupt meetings, travel, recordkeeping, medical devices

  10. Although not used by most of the world's people, daylight saving time is common in high latitudes. • At the tropics, near the Equator, the hours of daylight are constant. • At mid and high latitudes, summers have long days and winter has short days because of the tilt of the earth.
