  6. Managing homepage banners • Optimum number of banners: 5 • Maximum number of banners: 7 • Length of time online: no more than 10 days • Homepage owners: keep standby banners with key messages as a back-up • Plan ahead: standard Design Team lead time is 10 days • Banners requested by the Press Team are fast-tracked and done same day www.derby.ac.uk

  7. Banner design – best practice • Calls-to-action: it’s intuitive that clicking on a banner leads to more info • Therefore avoid phrases like ‘Find out more’, ‘Read more’, ‘See more’ • Phrases such as ‘Book your place’ ‘Register to take part’ are fine: they convey a required action • Banner copy: • Make it succinct - visitors are scanning the homepage quickly • Put what people need to know (not what you want to tell them) • Two lines only recommended – a headline and sub-header • Links: banners must link to a University page (not to external websites) • Images: on-brand images can be sourced from our official Flickr site (https://www.flickr.com/photos/derbyuni/sets/) www.derby.ac.uk
