  1. Alley Research Grant A basic overview of the research

  2. How did this come about? • The CYCA has held alley clean ups at least once a year for the past several years • This has mainly focused on the alley on Tanglewood across from Peabody Elementary to help ensure school kids are safe • The downside is that after 4 hours of work, although the alley was clear, it would regrow in a couple of months and some volunteers would get poison oak/ivy Photo courtesy of Ashli Blow - MicroMemphis

  3. The Grant • The CYCA thought that there had to be a better solution • We went to the MPD and MLGW and they gave letters of support for our research • Then, we applied for a small grant ($2,500) from the Strengthening Communities Program at U of M and …

  4. Yay! WE GOT IT!

  5. So, Now What? • There are three main goals: • 1. Determine current perceptions of alleys, community safety, and the role each plays in those perceptions. • 2. Evaluate community buy-in to the current alley maintenance plan and its perceived effectiveness. • 3. Gather alternative ideas of upkeep and usage. • Why? • We want to develop a sustainable, feasible plan that down the road we may be able to implement. This will become part of the CYCA’s strategic goals.

  6. What This is Not • This meeting is mainly an informational meeting. We will not be discussing different options at this time. We do want to do that though, and we encourage you to take part in a focus group. • With this grant, we are only gathering information.

  7. First Step: The Survey • The first step in gauging opinions, gathering options and prioritizing is to survey you the residents • This is the fastest, most efficient approach to finding out what your thoughts are • The Survey Itself • The Bribe: If you complete the survey by Nov 25th, you are eligible for a $50 Target gift card. We will have a drawing of those who have completed the survey.

  8. Next: Focus Groups • We will be forming 2 different focus groups that will meet and discuss alley issues, possible solutions and so forth in-depth. • These will meet twice before June, 2012. • Food will be provided 

  9. After It Is All Said and Done… • We will have a final research document • It will outline the issues that residents current face with the alleys, your proposed solutions and means of upkeep as well as who you feel should be responsible or a partner for implementing the final plan
