What is advising? • The primary purpose of the academic advising program is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals. • Academic advising has an impact on retention, academic success of students, and the students' career choice process.

  4. Academic Advising: Purpose • We are educators. • Student learning and personal development. • The responsibility for advising is shared among both academic advisors and faculty.

  5. Academic Advising: Pedagogy • Methods that employ active and collaborative learning tactics. • Recognize the social nature of learning.

  6. Advising is Teaching • Requires collaboration between educator and student. • Involves rational, goal-directed behavior. • Focus on problem-solving, decision-making and evaluation skills.

  7. Academic Advising: Context • Circumstances call for the formation and implementation of educational and life plans. • Advising practices are conditioned by policies and practices.

  8. ACADEMIC ADVISING: FOCUS The focus is on the whole student and developing realistic plans for his or her life and career.

  9. ACADEMIC ADVISING: CONTENT Student and advisor construct knowledge about the student’s opportunities and plans. How can goals be realized. Important to use educational planning.
