  1. Bienvenue! Dear Students and Parents/Guardians, Bonjour! Welcome to French 1! What an exciting year we are going to have as participants in the 1:1 iPad initiative! I’m looking forward to facilitating this transition in the world language classroom. At Hammond, students are very fortunate to have this opportunity to hone their technology skills for today’s job market. We will use the iPads on a daily basis in order to enhance the learning experience as we discover French and Francophone language and cultures. Technology can be a powerful tool when used in a meaningful way, so I look forward to discovering new things with you as we embark on this journey! This year, we are not using a textbook as we are moving towards a curriculum that requires all authentic materials for real-life application. Students will speak French exclusively in the classroom, listen to podcasts by native speakers, read texts that were written by natives for natives, watch news segments in French, and so on. We will adhere to ACTFL’s (American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages) standards for language proficiency. In order to meet the proficiency targets for French 1, students need to have as authentic of a classroom experience as possible. To make this year successful for all of us, it is essential that we keep the lines of communication open. If you have any questions about your/your student’s progress, please feel free to contact me. You can leave a message in the office or send me an e-mail and I will get back to you at my earliest convenience. This is my eleventh year teaching French, and my fifth year at Hammond. I have a BA in French and a Master of Arts in French Literature. I lived in France for two academic years and have visited other Francophone countries. I consider it a privilege to teach at Hammond and look forward to an exciting year! Madame C.
