  2. Background and Market Research Concept -Create a Smart Home based on a personalized bluetooth signal emitted from a cell phone. Target -Create a fully functional network of nodes to control the lighting in multiple rooms. Market Research -Market relatively small but growing. Within 10 years could be quite large. -Very few companies that specialize in design and installation. -Room for new competitors. 1

  3. Design Decomposition 2

  4. Control Decomposition Workstation / Touchscreen VGA Touchscreen or Monitor w/ Mouse Only User-Interactive Component Very Graphical, User Friendly Oriented Accessible at Entry Way or Common Area Graphical User Interface C/C++ and Java Programming Languages Present User with Login Screen & Options Predetermined menu of Possible Settings Expected to Require the Most Research, Development and Testing Time of Project 3

  5. Control Decomposition Host PC (Controller) Dedicated Workstation to Control All Network Communication Signals Software Written in C/C++ and Java Analyze and Record Incoming Sensor Data Send Respective Control Signals to Devices Activity Display Real-Time Display of Current Occupants and their Location Plotted over a Diagram of the Building Display Activity Log of Incoming as well as Outgoing Occupants ( Feature Optional ) 4

  9. Discussion - Use a Wired Ethernet cable for communication between the PC and each node • If successfully completed, switch to a Wireless Network • using 802.11b • Bluetooth Class 2 Device • Transmits a signal between 10-15 meters • Strong enough to be detected in the room of the user but • not too strong to be detected by nodes in different rooms • Design a device for each node that will block the bluetooth • signal from coming through a wall 8

  10. Discussion • Photo sensors placed in each room to detect light in a room • - During the day, a light would not be needed when the • user walks into a room • - Manual switch will also be available for the user for cases • when more light is needed • Recognizing the bluetooth signal at each node is very • important for our system to work properly • Configure the Graphical User Interface for the • Workstation to communicate with the Host PC 9
