  2. The Great Depression -started with the stock market crash in 1929 and continued through the 1930’s. High unemployment rates, low amount of trade, and factories were shut down.

  3. Great Depression Was due to having an unregulated economy People were buying stocks based entirely on speculation During the 1920’s or “Roaring 20’s” people were taking out loans to simply to buy stocks. When the stock market crashed, banks started calling back their loans

  4. Banks started closing, factories started closing, people could not find work anywhere. Unemployment rates rose over 27%

  5. Without people working, without people buying, the industrial economy dropped by 42% People began to see that things might be better under socialism where wealth is shared equally. -called on the government for more social programs

  6. Canadian Socialism The Rise of The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation Wrote out the Regina Manifesto: -Called for shelters for the jobless -job creation programs -a pension plan -health services should be subsidized

  7. Eventually changed into the NDP (New Democratic Party) and have pushed for more social programs, (never won an federal election, but put enough pressure on the gov to make change happen)

  8. Socialism in Quebec -following World War Two Quebec began increasing spending on social programs -Quebec socialism was seen as a way of protecting French Identity -Parti Quebecois linked together French sovereignty to socialism
