  1. ACT Defined • Standardized Test (Multiple Choice) that measures your HS achievement and is one aspect College Admissions Departments use to determine admittance to college. (Other admission considerations can be GPA, Letters of Recommendation, Class Rank) • ACT Measures your ability in 4 areas: English, Math, Reading & Science

  2. ACT Overview • Four Subjects: • English (45 Minutes/75 Questions: Covers Usage/mechanics & rhetorical skills) • Math (60 minutes/60 Questions: Covers Algebra, Geometry & Trigonometry) • Reading (35 minutes/40 Questions: Covers Reading Comprehension after reading various topics) • Science (35 minutes/40 Questions: Covers Science Reasoning) • ***Writing (The ACT offers an optional writing section. Some colleges require the writing section. Find out if you need to take it by checking with the college you want to attend.)

  3. Example ACT Questions • A car averages 27 miles per gallon. If gas costs $4.04 per gallon, which of the following is closest to how much the gas would cost for this car to travel 2,727 typical miles? • $44.44 • $109.08 • $118.80 • $408.04 • $444.40 *Correct Answer is D

  4. ACT Scoring • The ACT is scored on a range from 1(low)-36(high). Average score is a 21. • How is the ACT scored? • ACT counts the number of questions on each test that you answered correctly. (no deduction for incorrect answers) • ACT converts the # of questions correct on each section to a “scale score”. (Ex: 32/40 questions correct on Science would equal a number between 1-36, say a “28”) • ACT averages the four subjects to give you a composite score. (Ex: Math-19, English-23, Reading-24 & Science-22 Composite Score of 22)

  8. Take the ACT • Every Junior in Colorado will take the ACT in April!!! • To sign up for a different test date visit www.actstudent.org. This website will be the best way to answer many of your questions including: test dates, test cost, study materials and other process questions.

  9. Preparing for the ACT • Study with friends • Visit www.actstudent.org • There are lots of practice questions, test prep strategies and tips for doing well on the test. • Tutoring centers • Smartphones • Download ACT apps that will prepare you for the test with questions and study information.
