  2. Combining Syllable • 1. When one consonant is between two vowels, the consonant might close the first syllable or it might go with the second syllable, leaving the first syllable open • Examples: relish or protect Open Closed • re lish or relish? • pro tect or protect

  3. Be flexible Be patient • You need to try both ways until the word sounds right • BUT…. • Try the consonant with the second syllable first. It is more common. • If it doesn’t work, try it with the first syllable

  4. Other hints • You can have a 2 syllable word that ends with a open syllable • Bingo or Limbo • If the first syllable is open and ends with ‘y’, it will say • sky line
