  6. EDS KEY INITIATIVES EDS Webinar – Update • Our Webinars continue to be extremely successful • Our last Webinar was held in conjunction with SSCS on Date: May 23, 2012 • Lecture Title: From Deep Trenches to Skyscrapers – Orthogonal Scaling • Speaker: S.S. Iyer EDS Shortcourse DVD ?

  7. EDS DL and MQ Programs Improvements to increase effectiveness Meyya Meyyappan VP for Educational Activities and Juin Liou VP for Regions/Chapters

  8. DL Program: Selection of DL Candidates • EDS by far has the most number of DLs, compared to similarly-sized IEEE Societies. We have 115 DLs currently. • CAS = 20 DLs, IAS = 13 DLs, MTTS = 13 DLs, SSCS = 17 DLs • With this many DLs, is the title even prestigious? Other Societies only have a handful of DLs as above and the DL title is hard to come by; as a result, prestige also is high. • Due to the large number of DLs, the administration of the DL Program is very time consuming. • Current EDL DL Selection Guidelines are too lenient/easy • Any Fellow can be a DL; automatic approval upon nomination • Any Senior member can be a DL too, if nominated. • Senior Member case goes for approval of the Education Committee, but it is rare that a nomination does not get approved.

  9. Membership and DL distribution EDS DLS EDS Members by Region

  10. Suggestions for DL Selection • Grandfather the current list of DLs • In the current list, drop the inactive DLs as we go along using the rule we have now: if a DL does not perform 2 lectures in 2 years, then he/she gets dropped • Selection of Future DLs • Minimum qualification: Fellow • Exception ok for regions with not many Fellows (Regions 7 & 9) : then allow Senior Members • Ask for a sample 5 minute ppt. in the nomination package? • Ask the EduCom to be tough in the evaluation and approval • Selection will be done only ONCE a year during December ADCOM. NO YEAR-AROUND VOTING!

  11. MQ Program • Very popular currently, we get a lot of requests • Limited funding; we declined 66% of the requests this year • We always strive for a Regional Balance when granting funding requests • Unscientific data tells this: • Attendance for MQs is very high in Asia • Attendance in North America and Europe is rather small • (One MQ in Canada had just the organizer’s group members plus a handful of people) • Should we go for “maximum people per dollar”? If so, no MQs will be funded outside of Asia! • Insist on organizers doing a good job of promoting the event.

  12. We need your comments and feedback

  13. Summary of Responses • DL Program is designed more of a service to members than as a prestige to the DLs. • So, it is ok to have a larger number of DLs than other societies of comparable size • Need the numbers to draw from a large pool to cover all regions. • Fellow is not a criteria for a good DL. Demands are good speaking ability, subject matter expertise, interesting topics… • Needs vary among countries and audiences • Advanced topics and recent results in advanced countries whereas Introductory Lectures in chapters at Universities in developing countries

  14. Summary of Responses (continued) • Use feedback from DL/MQs effectively • Presentation of EDS slides needs to be streamlined and should be condensed to about 5 slides • Strong sentiments against tinkering with the program too much • Feeling is that it is working fine the way it is

  15. Recommendations • No major changes to the DL/MQ programs, but make them more effective and productive. • Condense the EDS slides and get more feedback from the chapters organizing the DL/MQ • Use the current process in place to drop inactive DLs. • DL Nomination Review once a year with final decision by the Committee in the December ADCOM • Remove the ‘Automatic approval’ provision for Fellows. A number of feedbacks indicated that a nominee being a Fellow does not mean that he/she is a good speaker and/or the topic is interesting. • Keep the Senior Member option open for all regions
