  1. Content Filtering and Student Protection

  2. Current Protocol • Effective January 18, 2006 • Acceptable uses are activities required to conduct the businesses of education and libraries. They help fulfill the mandates set forth by School Divisions, Post Secondary Institutions, Libraries and Saskatchewan Learning. Acceptable use is any application used in the delivery of services by education partners, which does not disproportionately consume available resources.

  3. CNET and Youtube • Appendix "C" GAMES/MULTIMEDIA: • Using the CNET EDUVPN infrastructure to access games or multimedia services for non-educational purposes is an unacceptable use of a valuable resource and is not permitted. • Emphasis on Non-educational

  4. Important Principles • Protection of Students / Due Diligence • Vulgarity, pornography, violence, hate • Parents expect us to take reasonable measures to protect their children • Adequate access to online content • Educational resources are ever-changing

  5. Filtering • Websites which: • Promote or enable hacking, software piracy, criminal skills, or other potentially illegal acts. • Include sexually explicit content or discussions, such as pornography or erotica beyond the curricula topics such as sexuality or human reproduction. • Contain violence or other forms of graphic or “extreme” content or language. • Promote, enable, or discuss bigotry or hate speech or other immoral activities.

  6. Examples of Educational Content on sites which have been blocked • Youtube • Tacoma Bridge • Genetics 101 • 100 Best Youtube Videos for Teachers • Flickr • Creative Commons Images • Parabola Picture • Others • Health Canada, CBC Archives, Tourism websites, hzsd.ca, etc
