While commonly they affect the hip joint, each hip arthritis condition has its own aetiology and symptoms which are as follows: Osteoarthritis: Most common form of hip arthritis that is characterized by the wear and tear of the hip joint. The cartilage that lines the ball and socket joint wears away as people age, resulting in grinding if the joint which over time can damage the joint causing pain and swelling.   4. Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is the autoimmune disorder that causes systemic joint pain and swelling not just at the hip but throughout the body. The joint capsule is lined with synovial lining and is essentially filled with lubricant fluid that helps the joint move smoothly, RA swells sup this lining causing pain and swelling and overtime the joint and cartilage gets deteriorated.
