  1. Opening up Asia Chapter 2 Sect 3 Summarize how Portugal built a trading empire in Asia Analyze the rise of the Dutch and Spanish dominance in the region Understand how the decline of Mughal India affected European traders Standards: 10SS3 Students will analyze political and economic change in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. a: Trace the great voyages of discovery B:Discuss the exchanges of plants, animals, technology, culture and ideas among Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas in the 15th and 16th centuries and the major economic and social effects on each continent.

  2. A Refresher: • Prince Henry was the Explorer Dude of all time. • New technology made travel better— iBoat, iSail, iKnow, iCompass, iMap, • Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue—1492 • The Pope divided the world between S / P : Spain went west, Portugal East. • Africa had remained geographically “closed” but coastal slavery trade exploded. • The world “mall” was now open—iShop!!!

  3. The Line of Demarcation

  4. South and SE Asia • Portugal exploited Indian Ocean area for the good that were there. • Once controlled by a powerful empire in India—the Mughal Empire. • Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered the area by 1511—massacring people in the name of the church. • Within 50 years, the Portuguese had a large empire in SE Asia

  5. Portuguese Outposts--1600

  6. But the Portuguese didn’t stay • They made outposts. • They were mean, harsh people (in general). (Is that a fair statement about EVERYONE?) • (If you live by the sword…..)

  7. “Bo”—Obama’s Portuguese Water dog

  8. The Dutch

  9. The first shipment of spices made the people crazy for spices and wealth! The Dutch East India company soon ruled the trade world!

  10. The Dutch had a Different attitude • Set up settlements around their world to stay. • The government was not involved with this company and… • The company did all the “work” with the people (treaties, governments, wars). • Used force but used diplomacy as well—became part of the communities they conquered. • By 1650—the Dutch ruled trade with the East.

  11. Take a second • Make a list of the 10 things you MUST have for your next move—It’s all you will have for 6 months. (Temperate climate) 1 large suitcase. • List 5 things you would expect to be there when you arrived. • List 3 reasons you would want to stay in a new place. • List 2 reasons you would not want to stay…

  12. The Spanish • Remember Magellan? Claimed the Philippines for SP—within 50 years that had conquered and colonized. • The “Church” once again played a big role. • The Philippines became a key trading link between western America and Europe.

  13. The British • Had concentrated on the Americas • Established the British East India Company to get some of the eastern riches • Forced out the French in India • Forced the Mughal leaders to accept the British “rule.”

  14. Sepoys were the troops of the “private” armies of Mughals established by the trading companies

  15. Oh yes, Back to the Muggles—no, you know better—The Mughal Empire • The Mughals had worked with the Westerners. • They dazzled the Westerners with their color, textiles, spices. • They granted trading rights, the right to build forts, etc. Saw no threat. • Bad mistake • Over time they weakened and the British, French and Dutch became stronger and stronger • Soon the native people were a “part of” the trading empires of the west.

  16. Fill in the two important points from each country’s exploration European Exploration in South and Southeast Asia
