  1. Authentic Spirituality Colossians 1

  2. Background Col. 1:1-2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, [2] To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

  3. Paul Ephesus Acts 19:9-10 … He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. [10] This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

  4. Background Col. 1:3-5 We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, [4] since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints;

  5. Background Col. 1:5-7 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel [6] which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth;

  6. Background Col. 1:7-8 just as you learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow bond-servant, who is a faithful servant of Christ on our behalf, [8] and he also informed us of your love in the Spirit.

  10. Authentic Spirituality:Bradshaw’s View “There are myriad approaches to both prayer and meditation. No way is the right way . . . The real thing is the actual experience of God . . . Spiritual growth comes through deepening insight into my being.” • John Bradshaw, Bradshaw On: The Family (Deerfield Beach, Florida: Health Communications, 1988), pp.234,235.

  11. Authentic Spirituality:Walsh’s View GOD: You cannot hear God until you stop thinking that you’ve already heard God. I cannot tell you my truth until you stop telling me yours. WALSH: But my truth about God comes from you. GOD: Who said so? WALSH: Others.

  12. Authentic Spirituality:Walsh’s View GOD: What others? WALSH: Leaders, ministers, rabbis, priests, books--the Bible, for heaven’s sake! GOD: Those are not authoritative sources. WALSH: They aren’t? GOD: No.

  13. Authentic Spirituality:Walsh’s View WALSH: Then what is? GOD: Listen to your feelings. Listen to your highestthoughts. Listen to your experience. Whenever any of these differ from what you’ve been told by your teachers or read in your books, forget the words. Words are the least reliable purveyor of truth.
