  4. Job Search Preparation • Update your voice mail – keep it professional • Sign-up for a professional sounding email address • Update your cover letter and resume • Have a list of three professional reference ready • Google yourself to see what comes up-employers will do the same

Job Search • A job search can be conducted in many different ways: online; in-person; over the phone; and at a job fair. • Today we will touch on online job searches • Common online job search websites (see handout): • Don't limit your job searching to the top sites like Monster or CareerBuilder. Check the smaller sites that focus on a location or field • www.indeed.com • www.craigslist.com • www.moster.com • www.employmentguide.com • www.careerbuilder.com • www.washingtonpost.com

  6. Job Search Continued: • Give yourself plenty of time to fill out an online application. • Many employers have you take an online test prior to an interview (ex: large grocery stores). Do not speed through; read the questions thoroughly. • Craigslist can be a useful but tricky job search tool. Let’s discuss some ways you can come up with appropriate search results.

  7. Personal Job Search • Please take the next 30 minutes to begin your job search. • Be sure to print off all descriptions so you have something to refer back to • If you have a questions, please don’t hesitate to ask

Preparing for the Interview • Know what job you are seeking • Research the company • Review your resume • Know your accomplishments • Practice answers to difficult questions • Know your strengths and weaknesses • Think about your future professional goals • Practice the interview process with someone

Pre-Interview Checklist • Shoes are clean • Clothing is wrinkle and stain-free • Nails are clean and not painted an abnormal color • Hair is neat • Extra jewelry is left at home • Clean copies of resume is ready • The address, directions and phone number of the meeting place is printedalong with the names of everyone you are meeting

Interview Tips Do: • Arrive early • Turn off your cell phone • Address the interviewer(s) as Mr. or Ms. • Shake hands firmly • Keep eye contact • Smile • Have a positive attitude • Ask questions about the position • Listen to the entire question before answering • Send a thank you letter or email Don’t: • Chew gum or candy • Wear heavy perfume (or smoke!) • Use slang or profanity • Fidget or ramble • Provide one word answers • Provide false information • Ask about time off, pay or benefits • Complain about a previous boss or coworker • “Friend” an interviewer on any social media outlet

A Resume • Your resume is an employers first look at who you are, what your experience is, and how your knowledge and skills could be an asset to their company. • While not all employers need a resume, majority do. • Basic parts: • Summary of Qualifications • Work Experience • Education, Awards, and Certifications • Addition Activities (ex: volunteer work)

Getting Started • To start your resume you will need to collect your previous employment information • Please begin filling out the resume form (see handout) • Due to limited time, resumes will be discussed in full at a later workshop.
