Kashmir prior 47’ princely states independently controlled – Muslim • Independence – choose independent, India or Pakistan (leader and not people) • Pressure to go India or Pakistan • Before decision made Pakistan invaded • Told to leave by UN, but refused – so both countries had militaries and fighting in the area • 1948 – UN resolution splitting between the two countries, supposed to be a “plebiscite” • 2/3 India; 1/3 Pakistan • Why would each side NOT want a plebiscite???? • the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1947, 1965 and 1999 The Issue
