    1. Introduction to Addictive Behaviors HD 199 Fall 2007 Mark Harris M.A. LCC Counseling Department Day 1 Week 5 10/23/2007

    2. Internet Addictions The Band of Six Enemies A Man who conquers the band of six enemies within him ( Desire, anger, greed, pride, intoxication, and joy ) conquers the earth too. - Kama Sutra

    3. Internet Addictions Any emerging technology has moral implications for what it makes possible. Any technology mirrors the values of the culture that produced it. When we hear about a technology, who do we hear about it from? Those that stand to benefit from it.

    4. Internet Addictions What do we hear about it? Only the good things, never the downside. It is not that the downside is not known. Corporations are very conservative. They don’t like surprises and they don’t like taking risks. So if the potential for profit outweighs the risks they will sell it and conceal the risks: Cars, Drugs, Technology. The Hero is the Teller of the Tale – African Proverb

    5. Internet Addictions Television is the organ for corporate America through which desire is created. But it is one sided and non-interactive. One effect is that it colonizes experience, you trust the reality of television more than your own experience. Or television tells you what you think you should feel, or what other people are feeling: Normalizes a certain experience. “They couldn’t put it on TV (Advertising) if it wasn’t true” – 1:4 people surveyed believed this statement to be true in research conducted in the 70’s and 80’s.

    6. Internet Addictions The technology for the Internet was originally created for the military and the research establishment supporting military research. All very benign, because sharing information is a innocuous thing. But: What is the purpose of military research? To gain an advantage What kind of advantage would one gain by making an interactive form of Television? Interactive would be more than addicting.

    7. Internet Addictions Why? The subject object boundaries are blurred. Then moral boundaries are blurred because of the anonymity. You can be anyone other than yourself. You can sculpt your own image. The Internet brings the power that corporate America has in promoting addiction into your home. It can connect people at a distance.

    8. Internet Addictions Cybersexual Addiction Equation for Infidelity: They say nice things about you + They’re attractive + You Both Interact Well + You say nice things back + Fantasize = Lust, Puppy Love, Reveal Feelings Risk Rejection. No Rejection? Of course not who could not like you? Who would not pay attention to you? Then if your partner is found wanting…. Jerry Springer time….

    9. What I Left Out, Where we left off. Remember I defined drug use as crossing the line from abuse to addiction? What was crossing the Line? (Comprecheck) Needle use & Smoking “White” drugs. There’s another one even more widespread: Diverting and Using Rx / Prescription drugs Diverting is illegal (You cross a line there to Abuse automatically) Using: 1. Not your own prescription 2. especially not the way the drug was intended i.e. crushing and snorting or smoking pills. Pills are designed to be taken orally for a reason.

    10. What I Left Out, Where we left off. Notice I left out being legally addicted? Aka Pain Management…(It is under a doctors care & by informed choice) So yeah, I have read your papers. For the most part ya’ll get it. Where you didn’t I tried to give suggestions and observations. Recon is a military term where you take a position, unobserved by your opponent. You try and be objective, but obviously you can’t remove your feelings from the observations. Some of you were too much in your feelings, and not enough of an observer…(I did say observe your feelings, but not to the exclusion of clarity) You recon something with the eye to change at least its effect on you, if not its effect on others. Society is pushing on you, It’s time you pushed back.

    11. Internet Addictions Why? As an example with an emerging technology… With the Internet, where people get into problems is The subject object boundaries are blurred. In street talk, you act differently in real time with a person. You observe social protocols in person. You can read facial expressions, body language, you can have a feel for when a person is lying to you. With the Internet, you take the screen at face value. You’ve been conditioned by television to take it as real Then moral boundaries are blurred because of the anonymity. You can be anyone other than yourself. You can sculpt your own image. The Internet brings the power that corporate America has in promoting addiction into your home. It can connect people at a distance.

    12. Internet Addictions People who wouldn’t, couldn’t, or shouldn’t meet because of the structures and strictures of society. One of you did a recon on a porn shop. The Internet has made possible: Cybersexual Addiction Remember the attitude Oral Sex is not Sex? A related attitude is cybersex is not cheating because you don’t actually meet. But you do get emotionally attached. Some people consider that just as bad, hence the question Are you in Love with them?

    13. Internet Addictions Equation for Cyber infidelity & Infidelity: They say nice things about you + They’re attractive + You Both Interact Well (Testosterone + Oxytocin) + You say nice things back + Fantasize = Lust, Puppy Love, (Testosterone + Oxytocin) Reveal Feelings Risk Rejection. No Rejection? Of course not who could not like you? Who would not pay attention to you? (More Trust & Lust) Then if your partner is found wanting…. Who wouldn’t be because the Net experience becomes more real and intense than “real time”. Then you plan to get together and its Jerry Springer time….

    14. Internet Addictions In infidelity and cyberinfidelity, you justify your actions by saying, I can stop at any time, and I feel good, so that can’t be bad… Unseen in that emotional equation is the effect on others…but its hard to see that in the middle of things. So usually until something comes crashing to an end, you are discovered or caught, you don’t stop. So to that reality we look at building internal strengths to help you stop.

    19. Natural Mind Natural Mind: The state of being in which the inherent potential in each human being can develop, grow, be sustained, and expanded by conscious choice.

    20. Natural Mind

    21. Natural Mind These are separated only to talk about them. In a healthy and aware person they work together in balance. Spirit is the real experience of connection to something greater than yourself. Referred to in at least two ways: 1. Silent Compassionate Witness 2. Still Small Voice Within (Your own Personal Intuition: It is always True and Correct, Ya Know Ya shoulda listened!)

    22. Natural Mind: Religion as Picture Frame or Cage Spirituality is your personal experience of being connected to something greater than yourself. Spirituality exists without religion. A religion is a set of prescribed exercises to develop spirituality. Religion can exist without spirituality, because all it is = Scripture, dogma, ritual, beliefs, values, practices.

    23. Natural Mind: Religion as Picture Frame or Cage The important question to ask: Does the framework allow my soul to expand or contract? Experience the Kingdom of Heaven within, or fear the Possibility of Hell, Enlightenment or Attachment? Baraka or Nafs? The Good Red Road or Koyanisquaatsi? Flow wit’ da Tao or wonder How? Know or Wonder Whas s‘up N’amean, N’am sayin’?

    24. Introduction to Addictive Behaviors HD 199 Fall 2007 Mark Harris M.A. LCC Counseling Department Day 2 Week 5 10/25/2007

    25. Internet Addictions to Natural Mind The technology of Natural Mind is at the heart of all human cultures and technologies generated by them including religions etc. But if information been hidden from you as it has been with say the internet, or certain forms of religion…then you suffer…why do you suffer…”For you love what deceives you” - Gospel of Mary Magdalene What’s the way out of suffering: Understand why you suffer, and what makes you suffer and you will be free of suffering…for the truth will set you free.

    26. Internet Addictions to Natural Mind Discipline is to cultivate and follow the teachings of an Inner Teacher. Intuition is lessons taught by that Inner Teacher that is in you that Is You… You cannot fall in Love with anyone without having Love in You… You cannot learn anything without actually having it in you already in order to recognize it…the flash of Insight! Aha! The flash of Intuition! I See…. Those who have ears to hear… You can only Hear it if You’ve Heard it… Learning is remembering you knew it.

    27. Internet Addictions to Natural Mind Television creates the desire by making you think you don’t have what you need and you need what they’re selling… The Internet exploits this by making the grass look greener on the other side… Ya still have to mow it… And its probably greener because the sewer line broke underneath it… Sometimes when you change relationships you are not upgrading, you are simply switching different sets of baggage while on your way to hell in a handbasket. You need to discover that you are enough, and in Natural Mind you discover and cultivate those inner resources. Seen?

    28. In Natural Mind You push outward with the force of your Spirit until… A Balance is Achieved where your Inner World remains unchanged. You are aware of what’s going on inside, regardless of the outer world’s activities. The outer world can be influenced by this “Soul Force” (As King referred to it.) Placing it as a personal “spiritual” power. Spiritual meaning energy: The ability to do work motivated by conscious intention.

    29. Psychogeometry I’m using a Geometrical Metaphor…it’s actually an Ancient Old Egyptian Mystery School Trick… Use a known thing…to refer to an unknown or hidden thing. Use a physical thing to refer to something in the energetic world that exists by analogy. Or the principle As Above, So Below… Psycho-Geo-Metric Mind-Earth-Measure, Calculate Scientific American 1983 The Hidden Dimensions of Spacetime…11 Dimensions…String theory…etc

    30. Psychogeometry 1st Dimension: Line /Length 2nd Dimension Square / Length Width 3rd Dimension Cube / Length Width Depth 4th Dimension SpaceTime 5th Dimension Electromagnetism 6th Dimension Strong Nuclear Force (Holds Atoms Together) 7th Dimension (Radioactivity) 8th - 11th Dimensions (Subatomic: Quarks, Muons, - Strings) Point being Humans are multidimensional because we can manipulate forces only if we are above them…

    31. Natural Mind In the beginning of your life you begin to learn to separate yourself from your environment and form an identity. A baby learns about object permanence, expresses emotions, acquires language and learning, learns to eat, walk, and use its body.

    32. Four Brains Lizard Brain Mammal Brain Human Brain Angel Brain

    33. Lizard Brain Can I Eat it? Approach Pleasure Will it Eat Me? Fear and Flee Pain Can I copulate with it? Repeat Pleasure Reflex without thinking in addictive behavior.

    34. Mammal Brain - Limbic System Herd Instinct - Addictive Using Peer Group

    35. Human Brain - Neo Cortex In this particular image they say 3 brains because the Cerebellum and Brain Stem are pretty much the only things functioning when you’re a “vegetable”. Animal brain is what I referred to as mammal brain.

    36. Human Brain - Neo Cortex Here’s another one that matches. Basically the Neo Cortex gives us rational thought.

    37. Angel Brain - Pre- Frontal The basic activity of this brain region is considered to be orchestration of thoughts and actions in accordance with internal goals. The most typical neurologic term for functions carried out by the pre-frontal cortex area is Executive Function.

    38. Angel Brain - Pre- Frontal Executive Function relates to abilities to differentiate among conflicting thoughts, determine good and bad, better and best, same and different, future consequences of current activities, working toward a defined goal, prediction of outcomes, expectation based on actions, and social "control" (the ability to suppress urges that, if not suppressed, could lead to socially unacceptable outcomes). Many authors have indicated an integral link between a person's personality and the functions of the prefrontal cortex

    39. Dimensions of Natural Mind People have experiences along all four lines. (I am These)

    40. Dimensions of Natural Mind The next dimension beyond this allows one to "see", perceive, or feel, and therefore manipulate, or resist the forces which shape our feelings, body image and wellness, our mental health, and our spiritual being. Culture shapes us, we also shape culture. Sometimes we are shaped by things we don’t know we know…(Deni Dragonfly story)

    41. Dimensions of Natural Mind Rau, Chi, Prana, Ki, Mana, Kundalini, Transfer…I’m manipulating energy that cannot be detected by machines yet I can feel it. No one taught me, told me…I’d only had a couple of yoga classes, numerous psychedelic experiences…but I knew it would work. How did I know, without anybody telling me? Did the Devil make me do it? What if…(name your favorite human ideal) was the way all humans are supposed to be? Would you do greater things than that? Anyway to continue with the Psychogeometry lesson…

    42. Dimensions of Natural Mind: Simplex Each higher dimension contains all the lower ones within it. If you use this as a metaphor for human development:
