  6. History and Background of Medieval Romance Literature • The original Romances were set in lands all over the world and named for the country in which they were set. A tale set in the Orient would then be part of the genre entitled “The Matter of the Orient.”

  7. History and Background of Medieval Romance Literature • The most popular of the genre were set in England, and known as “The Matter of England.” They featured tales of Sir Gawain, King Arthur, and his round table.

  8. History and Background of Medieval Romance Literature • These tales are idealistic and NOT realistic. The heroes, the settings, the gallant love, and simplistic endings take readers beyond the confinements of ordinary life.

  9. Common Elements of Medieval Romance Literature include . . . 1.Noble hero or heroes (of high birth or social status) 2. Presence of the supernatural or mysterious (unlike ordinary life) 3. Code of honor (usually chivalry) 4. Daring deeds (usually as a test of honor) 5. Far away setting (time and/or place) 6. Events and characters come in sets of 3 or 7 (sometimes 12 or 40) 7. Quest for love and/or adventure 8. Simple and inevitable plot (usually happily-ever-after) 9. A light-hearted tone

  10. Why are they called Romantic? The characteristics of these tales make them very similar to the classical tales of Roman mythology. The term “Romantic” just means “like the Roman”. It was because these Medieval Romances featured so many examples of idealized love that the term “Romantic” eventually began to describe love and the attractive pursuit of it. “Courtly Love” is Term for the love of a man for an unattainable woman
