  1. Sentence Fragments, Run-ons, and Comma Splices By: Amanda, Jordin, Jake, Justin, and Becca

  2. What is a sentence fragment? Sentence fragments are pieces of sentences that have become separated from the main clause. • Example (fragment is underlined): I need to find a new roommate. Because I’m not getting along with the one I have.

  3. How to fix a sentence fragment • Correction of Example 1: I need to find a new roommate because I’m not getting along with the one I have. Most of the time all you need to do is remove the period placed in between the fragment and the main clause. In some cases additional punctuation may be needed.

  4. Why is that correct? The sentence, “Because I’m not getting along with the one I have,” doesn’t make any sense. Removing the period after, “I need a new roommate,” and adding “because” turns this sentence fragment into a complex sentence.

  5. What is a run-on sentence? A run-on sentence (fused sentence) is two or more independent clauses with no connecting phrase or punctuation separating them. • Example 1: They weren’t dangerous criminals they were detectives in disguise. • Example 2: I didn’t know which job I wanted I was too confused to decide.

  6. How to fix a run-on sentence • Correction of Example 1: They weren’t criminals; they were detectives in disguise. • Correction of Example 2: I didn’t know what job I wanted, and I was too confused to decide.

  7. Why is this correct? By adding in a connecting wordor punctuation mark between the two independent clauses the sentences becomes a complex sentence.

  8. What is a comma splice? Comma splices are defined as having two independent clauses that are connected together by only a comma. • Example 1: I have two puppies, they are both girls. • Example 2: I didn’t enjoy that meal, it had no flavor to it.

  9. How to fix a comma splice There are a few different ways that you can fix a sentence with a comma splice. • Correction 1, Example 1: I have two puppies, and they are both girls. • Correction 2, Example 1: I have two puppies. They are both girls. • Correction 1, Example 2: I didn’t enjoy that meal. It had no flavor to it. • Correction 2, Example 2: I didn’t enjoy that meal because it had no flavor to it.

  10. Why is that correct? Both of the sentences are independent clauses that are only connected by a comma. This makes the sentence hard to focus on. • By making them two separate sentences they are able to make sense. • By adding a connecting wordthe two independent clauses are connected together.
