  1. Tuesday, 8/27 Physics Basics Part 1 Scientific Notation

  2. Tuesday, 8/27 – Scientific Language • Find your seat and take out something to write with and paper (in your spiral or in your binder).

  3. Scientific Notation • Scientific notation is how we write very large or very small numbers. • This allows us to easily read and record numbers. • Example: 0.000000045 is the same as 4.5x10-8 Standard notation Scientific notation

  4. How to read exponents • If the exponent is positive it indicates a large number • Positive exponents tell you how many zeros to add to the right of the number. • Example:1.2 x103 = 1,200 • If the exponent is negative it indicates a small number • Negative exponents tell you how many times to move the decimal to the left. • Example: 6.1 x 10-3 = 0.0061

  5. Writing Scientific Notation • When writing scientific notation, only one digit is on the left of the decimal. • Example: 3.45 x 105 not 34.5 x 104

  6. Practice Write the following numbers in scientific notation: • 12,756 km (diameter of the earth) • 702,000,000 • .082 • .000000000087

  7. Practice Write the following numbers in scientific notation: • 12,756 km = 1.2756 x 104 • 702,000,000 = 7.02 x 108 • .082 = 8.2 x 10-2 • .000000000087 = 8.7 x 10-11

  8. Practice Write the following numbers in standard notation: • 5.902 x 10-4 • Speed of light 3 x 108

  9. Practice Write the following numbers in standard notation: • 5.902 x 10-4 =.00059020 • Speed of light 3 x 108 = 300000000

  10. Order of Operation • Numbers that are next to each other are multiplied. • Example: 9x or (9)(9) • Numbers that are in fraction form are divisible. • Example: represent 3 divided by 5. • Pulling the concepts together 3 5 ) ( 6 5 2 Which one or ones are in the multiplication position? Which one or ones are in the division position? Let’s solve it together

  11. Practice Solve the following: 1. 3 2. 8 4 5 4 2

  12. Practice Solve the following: 1. 3 2. 8 4 5 = 2.4 4 2 =16.0
