  1. Circulatory System 7.12B

  2. Circulatory System • Is a network in our bodies, similar to a highway. • Transports nutrients and oxygen to the body BUT HOW???

  3. Circulatory System • Is made up of…. 1. Heart 2. Blood vessels 3. Blood

  4. Heart • The heart is a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. • Our heart is a necessity! • Every time our heart beats it pushes or transports blood through blood vessels. • Is a Cardiac Muscle • and has 2 chambers

  5. Blood Vessels • This is the “highway” our blood travels through • They are called ARTERIES, CAPILLARIES, and VEINS.

  6. Arteries • Transport blood to our ORGANS, INTESTINES, and BRAIN and AWAY from your HEART. • Arteries are made up of three layers • Epithelial tissue • Smooth muscle • Connective tissue • Need strength and flexibility.

  7. Capillaries • Materials are exchanged between the blood and the body’s cells. • Capillary walls are only one cell thick • Pass oxygen and glucose through a process called diffusion. • Move materials from a high concentration to a low concentration.

  8. Veins • Last stop! • Also have three layers…but are thinner than arteries. • Larger veins have valves that help keep the blood from flowing backward.

  9. Pulse • Touch your wrist… you can feel the artery in rise up and down…this is your pulse. • You determine how fast your pulse is pumping through your heart rate. • Your pulse can also be called your blood pressure. • Your blood pumping is an involuntary action.

  10. Blood • Blood is what is pumped through our body’s “highway” • Blood is made up of four components • 1. plasma • 2. platelets • 3. red blood cells • 4. white blood cells

  11. Plasma • Yellowish liquid • Carries molecules that aid in digestion • Also carry vitamins and minerals • Carry away waste products • 3 groups of plasma proteins • 1. regulates the amount water in the blood • 2.helps fight disease • 3. interacts with platelets to form blood clots.

  12. Platelets • Fragments that play a role in forming blood clots. • Platelets are what stick to the sight of a wound. • When platelets are released they start a chemical reaction…producing a protein called fibrin. • Fibrin weaves a tiny net that forms a blood clot. • A scab is the hardened end result.

  13. Red Blood Cells • Carry the oxygen from your lungs and deliver it to the rest of your body. • Made of hemoglobin, which is an iron-containing protein that binds chemically to oxygen molecules. • This is what causes your blood to be bright red • Without oxygen they are dark red.

  14. White Blood Cells • Disease fighters • They recognize intruders and alert the rest of the body. • Some notify, some fight, and some produce the chemicals they use to fight off the invaders.

  15. Red vs. White • They are both made in our bone marrow • There are many manymore red blood cells than there are white blood cells • White blood cells are also bigger than red blood cells.

  16. Blood Types • A, B, AB, O • You must have the same blood types in order to have a successful blood transfusion.
