  2. Definition • Using symbols by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations(Merrium-Webster.com)

  3. In simpler terms…. • Symbolism is using an object to symbolize or stand for something else. • For example, our flag symbolizes our country. Whenever you see the flag, you think of the USA. • Any other real life examples? 1. 2. 3.

  4. Symbolism is not… • Something you do • Something you wear • A Way you look • But…Symbolism is representing something. • A ballet shoe can not represent you because you dance. • But it can represent you if you dance your way through life.

  5. And… • Symbolism does not have to be relevant to what you are talking about. • An example of that would be in “O Captain, My Captain!”… • The author is talking about World War 2 but is using a captain of a ship to represent it. • Symbolism can also be linked to a metaphor, like in “O Captain, My Captain!”, but not all the time.

  6. Recap: • Symbolism stand for or represents something. • Symbolism can not be… • Something you do • Something you wear • Or a way you look • Symbolism does not have to be relevant to the subject. • Symbolism CAN be linked to a metaphor
