Important Settings • Fangorn Forest where Marry and Pippin traveled through after escaping the Uruk-hai and Orcs. • Edoras in Rohirrim, a Viking-like place where Eomer, Eowyn, and King Théoden. • Helms Deep, a large valley. A fortress where King Théoden took refuge and later battled the Uruk-hai and Orcs. Tower of Orthanc, Saruman’s home and fortress, later defeated by the Ents. • Dead Marshes, where Frodo and Sam had to pass with Sméagol to get to the Gates of Mordor, vast marshes. • Shelob’s Lair, where Sam and Frodo had to venture to get inside Mordor.

Main Characters • Frodo Baggins- a hobbit, elf-like, the ring-bearer. • Samwise Gamgee- hobbit, companion of Frodo, Frodo’s gardener. • Gandalf- a wizard, leader of the Fellowship until he fell in Moria, later reunited in Fangorn. • Aragorn- a Dunedain, son of Arathorn, heir of Isildur, rightful King of Gondor. • Sméagol- an old hobbit-like creature, guide of Frodo and Sam, mischievous, later turns evil, sometimes referred to Gollum. • Faramir- a Captain of Gondor, Boromir’s brother, aids Frodo and Sam. • Saruman- a wizard, lived in Orthanc, turned evil from the lust for the ring. • Sauron- the Dark lord of Mordor, is in search for the ring.
