  2. There are four basic sentences in the English language • Simple • Compound • Complex • Compound/Complex

  3. Identify the following sentences. • Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound/Complex • I was the most joyful person when the President decided to call off school. • I was unhappy because I was looking forward to a cloudy day. • He was not only very polite, but he was an industrious person. • When we decided to go out to eat, we did not know that a thunder storm was nearby, and we left with no rain coats or umbrellas.

  4. Answers: (complex) • I was the most joyful person when the President decided to call off school. (complex) • I was unhappy because I was looking forward to a cloudy day. (compound) • He was not only very polite, but he was an industrious person. (compound/complex) • When we decided to go out to eat, we did not know that a thunder storm was nearby, and we left with no rain coats or umbrellas.

  5. Remember that . . . • IC or independent clause is a complete sentence. • DC or dependant clause is not a complete sentence Also remember --clauses are the building blocks of sentences.

  6. What makes a sentence? • You need three things to make a sentence. • 1. Subject • 2. Verb • 3. A complete thought

  7. Are these sentences? • When we went on a long journey through the woods on a sunny Friday morning. • It was fine. • Because he was not only tall but also one of the hardest workers in the area. • Sing that song. (View answers on the next slide.)
