Goals of the Grant • Working in a collaboration with CSULB and MERLOT, the Academic Staff College at Lucknow University will develop and deliver a certified professional development course for higher education faculty in India that improves and transforms higher education teaching and learning. • Capture and publish on the web what we learn from this innovation project so others can build upon our success and scale the exemplary practices and curriculum.

  3. What Do We Capture and Publish? • Your plans and reflections on what and why you’re learning and doing • Others learning from your thinking • Lesson plans using online learning materials • Defined student learning outcome within a paper • Learning exercises/activities using open educational resources • Assessment rubric of student performance • We will have a quality assurance process (see handout)

Tools for Authoring Materials • Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint documents can be posted in Voices and/or in our IITE Teaching Commons • MERLOT.org library has “online forms” to fill out and hosted on MERLOT.org • Member Comments • Learning Exercises • MERLOT Content Builder • Create websites using templates that are hosted by MERLOT.org

Why Use Technology? • Technology is an extension of: • You - to help you teach and learn • Others - to help them connect to in your teaching and learning • Technology can help bring EXPERTISE and CONTENT to teaching and learning • Discipline-centered materials are building blocks for your curriculum • Pedagogically-centered materials are tools to help you learning about different teaching strategies

Questions and Reflections • Without expertise and content, what happens to teaching and learning? • How do you and your students get access to expertise and content now? • What expertise and content would you like to have greater access to on a regular basis? • What technologies are you using now that is extending your abilities to teach?

  9. “Homework” • Prepare a short article that captures important lessons about the need, goals and processes for transforming education that are being developed through this course. • The following slides provide some prompts and activities that could help you develop your article • Write the article as a Word document • Begin with sharing your article with your colleagues in the Lucknow Voices (upload the document)

Questions and Reflections • Why use OER in teaching? • When and how should you use OER? • What are the benefits from using OER for • Teachers? • Students? • What are the barriers for using OER for • Teachers? • Students? • Write an essay that answers these questions OUTCOME: Co-author an article to be published on the website

Questions for Your Students • Invite 3-4 students in one of your classes to visit with you and learn about OER for • 5 minutes explaining OER • 10 minutes showing 1 OER website • 30 minutes discussing • What are the benefits from using OER for their learning? • When and how should you use OER? • What are the barriers for using OER? OUTCOME: Co-author an article on the students’ perspectives and reflect on how their perspectives affect your teaching

Session Summary • Technology is a tool to empower teachers and learners • OER are the building blocks for instructional success when teachers are guided by good instructional design principles • You can creatively and successfully design OER’s into your instruction and improve student success
