  2. What is polio??? • It is a viral disease • It’s been around since the beginning of humanity • You know you have it when: • Sometimes it causes paralysis • It can cause meningitis • Can paralyze the muscles that let you breathe

  3. What does it looklike???

  5. Symptoms • General discomfort or uneasiness • Headaches • Red Throat • Slight Fever • Sore Throat • Vomiting

  6. How is polio spread? • Direct person to person contact • Contact with infected mucus • Or infected phlegm form the nose or mouth • Or feces

  7. History of polio • 1789- recognized by Michael Underwood • Noticed it less in London and more in the countryside • 1887-Karl Oskar Medin • Saw that there were different forms of it • Originated in Asia, Europe, and Africa.

  8. Who is most susceptible? • Pregnant women • Very young people • People with weak immune systems • People who live in areas with poor sanitation

  9. Treatment • Antibiotics for UTIs • Moist heat • Pain Killers • Physical Therapy • Braces or Orthopedic shoes • Orthopedic surgery
