Aspire to Achieve to do list • STUDENT AS COLLEGE/CAREER READY PORTFOLIO • Career Exploration – Yearly inquiry (3 TOTAL) • Examples may include career searches on WOIS or Career Cruising that include pathway • interests and/or specific jobs • Cover Letter & Academic Resume – 11th grade • Financial Planning Activity to attain goal of 13th year plan/Reality Check (WOIS) – 11th grade • 13th Year Plan – 12th grade (This assignment will be included in the Reflective Paper the students will write.) • Miscellaneous – 12th grade (pick 2 of 7): •  Job shadow, internship or job •  Volunteer in a field of interest •  Take one of the following tests: • PSAT, SAT, ACT or ASVAB •  Complete a college or program application •  Scholarship Application •  FAFSA Night with LCC or Longview Schools •  Evidence of attending a College/Career Fair • >

  20. Things to work on now for colleges • Personal Statement—Most college application ask for some sort of personal statement. Practice writing them. • Talk about a time when you struggled and persevered. • What does diversity mean to you? • How will you impact our university? • What is leadership? • Academic Resume- What have you taken in school, clubs , activities, awards and COMMUNITY SERVICE

  22. Foundation Every one of you going to need something in the next 8 months from a parent, grandparent, teacher, or administrator, etc. How are you going to lay the foundation to have your needs met?

  23. Letters of Recommendation • Ask early. • Teachers, coaches, counselors, will NEVER write things for you or about you that are not true. Their integrity is on the line. In other words, make sure they have the good stuff to talk about.

  24. Preparation for success (PFS) • Student /Athletes: Access to Career Center from 2:40-3:15 every non-game day.

  27. What does “talk’s cheap” mean?

  28. Advice for students Follow through, do what you say you will do. This is called credibility. Finish for you. This is pride. Ask for help. This is strength, not weakness. Communicate with people you need. This will be a life skill. Don’t burn bridges. You might need the bridge to make the journey. Come to school. Duh!

  29. Advice for parents • Stay involved. Don’t take “I don’t know” or “nothin’” as a response • Communicate with Ms Maxey • Ask lots of questions. • Ask to see their work • Spend time on the website and on skyward.
