  2. Classroom Expectations • It is vital that children learn to take responsibility for their words and actions. • We are a classroom of kindness. We treat each other in a respectful manner. • We earn rewards for good behavior or pay consequences for poor choices.

Classroom Schedule 8:45 - 9:15 Morning Meeting & Read Aloud/ Reading Response 9:15 - 11:00 Language Arts / Reading / Writing 11:00-11:20 RECESS 11:20-12:00 Math -whole group instruction 12:00-12:45 Collaborative Math projects and small group instruction 12:45-1:30 LUNCH/RECESS 1:30-2:00 Schedule varies 2:00-3:00 Science / Social Studies / Art/ Writing 3:00 Planners 3:10 Dismissal Specialist Music – Tuesday (beginning in October) PE – Tuesday and Friday & some Wednesdays) Library – Tuesday

Daily Planner • Students list nightly homework, teacher messages and upcoming school events • Planner must be kept in student’s binder • Parents verify nightly assignments are complete and correct • VERY IMPORTANT TO SIGN EACH NIGHT) • Parents, initial ONLY if homework is complete! • Perfect opportunity for both parents and teacher to communicate

  8. Grading SMUSD Based Grading 4 – Exceeds 4th grade level standard; (consistently produces high level work) 3 – Meets 4th grade standard 2 – Approaching standard 1 – Well below standard

  9. Classroom Grading Policies • Assignments and homework are DUE ON THE DUE DATE. Missing or late assignments will be completed during recess and/or study hall. • Major assignments turned in LATE will be docked one full grade per day. • Common Core State Standards Based Report Card

Homework • Purpose: • To practice skills and strategies taught in class with the intention of further developing students’ Depth of Knowledge • To increase reading comprehension, vocabulary development and language skills • To complete unfinished class work • Time each night: No more than one hour per night! If this is too much for your child, please contact me! • I will be offering an early morning homework club, beginning late September.

  11. Math Curriculum This year we will continue teaching the new the Common Core State Standards in math and we will implement CCSS Language Arts. Standards for Mathematical Practice • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Make viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others • Model with Mathematics • Use appropriate tools appropriately • Attend to precision • Look for and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking and Listening Curriculum • Beginning this year, all Language Arts standards will be taught using Social Studies and Science reading materials. • There will be a mix of informational text and literature. • The benchmark requirements, in all areas have increased tremendously!

  13. Writing Curriculum This year we will continue to teach Common Core State Standards. Writing will take place across the curriculum. We will focus on three types of writing: * Persuasive/Opinion Writing • Narrative Writing • Informational/Expository Writing

  18. Volunteers needed! I wish for… a ROOM parent I wish for… an ART ATTACK parent I wish for volunteers on a regular basis. (some prep, some small group guidance) There will be many opportunities, throughout the year, for volunteers.
