Solar Installs In The Caribbean Jamaica • 500 kW of PV • 7800 Hot Water Installations • 60 MW site pending regulatory • Target 2500 kW of PV and 9800 Solar Hot Water installations by 2015 Cayman Islands • CORE Program – allows utility company to purchase energy from CORE generators • CUC can buy alternative energy from independent sources

  9. Incentives • Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) • Will allow customers to connect renewable-energy systems to CUC's distribution system • Customers can reduce their monthly energy bills by generating their own power from renewable energy while remaining connected to CUC's grid

Incentives • Consumer Owned Renewable Energy Program (CORE) • 2011: CORE Programme revised and approved by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), culminating in the Feed-In-Tariffs (FIT) Program • FIT provides for CUC to purchase energy from CORE generators at a rate approximate to the true cost of the renewable energy and to pass this cost through in the fuel factor

  15. Challenges • Funding, Subsidiaries and Feed-In-Tariffs needed • Very few FIT-type contracts • Much of the solar installed is energy offset • Takes time to establish trust • Projects that grow employment have best chance • PV projects at $0.40 cents /kW hr  could make the grade
