  3. About HH Angus & Associates • Established in 1919 • MEP Consulting Engineers • 200+ Employees • 60+ LEED APs • 50+ Professional Engineers • Has been designing sustainable building solutions since before there was a name for it

  4. Overview • Caribbean Market, Rates, Solar Installations and Incentives • Canadian Success Stories • Integrated Renewables • Connections and Suggestions • Challenges

  5. The Market • 40+ utilities • Large number of self-generators • Reliant on fossil fuels • International oil prices impact market • Shift to alternative energy sources

  6. The Market A Few Utilities

  7. Utilities – Electric Rates

  8. Solar Installs In The Caribbean Jamaica • 500 kW of PV • 7800 Hot Water Installations • 60 MW site pending regulatory • Target 2500 kW of PV and 9800 Solar Hot Water installations by 2015 Cayman Islands • CORE Program – allows utility company to purchase energy from CORE generators • CUC can buy alternative energy from independent sources

  9. Incentives • Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) • Will allow customers to connect renewable-energy systems to CUC's distribution system • Customers can reduce their monthly energy bills by generating their own power from renewable energy while remaining connected to CUC's grid

  10. Incentives • Consumer Owned Renewable Energy Program (CORE) • 2011: CORE Programme revised and approved by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), culminating in the Feed-In-Tariffs (FIT) Program • FIT provides for CUC to purchase energy from CORE generators at a rate approximate to the true cost of the renewable energy and to pass this cost through in the fuel factor

  11. Canadian Success Stories • Fortis – Owns shares of 2 regulated generators • Belize • Cayman Installation • MAN Diesel Canada • Over 500 MW of EPC plants installed • Black and McDonald • Angus Power / HH Angus • Bonaire wind/diesel plant • Cuba Ariguanabo

  12. Integrated Renewables on Bonaire

  13. Connections and Suggestions • Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum • October 2012 • Puerto Rico • Caribbean Electric Utility Services Company • 33 Utilities • 56 Associations PPA • Standard DSL Purchase Order • Developed to provide information on renewable energy in the Caribbean

  14. Connections and Suggestions • Focus on political, legal, and regulatory aspects for encouraging renewable energy in the Caribbean • Non-Profit Organization • Provides members with structural environment to complete formal requirements for a successful project

  15. Challenges • Funding, Subsidiaries and Feed-In-Tariffs needed • Very few FIT-type contracts • Much of the solar installed is energy offset • Takes time to establish trust • Projects that grow employment have best chance • PV projects at $0.40 cents /kW hr  could make the grade
