  3. Texas Under Spain1519-1685;1690-1821 • The first European nation to claim what is now Texas was Spain. In 1519, Cortez was establishing Spanish presence in Mexico, and Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda mapped the Texas coastline. Mexico , and other Spanish missions, forts and civil settlements followed for nearly a century and a half until Mexico threw off European rule and became independent in 1821. After 1785, the red and yellow striped Spanish flag has a lion and a castle on a shield with a crown as the background.

  5. Texas Under France1685-1690 • In 1685, France planted its flag in east Texas near the gulf coast. French nobleman founded a colony called Fort St. Louis. The colony was doomed by a series of problems : disease, famine, and hostile Indians. Because of these problems, France’s claim to Texas vanished.   7. Texas Under Mexico1821-1836 • After Mexico became independent, pioneers from the Hispanic south and the Anglo north flowed into Texas . Anglo Texans were now Mexican citizens. There were problems because of the two different cultures . In the meantime, Mexican General Santa Anna declared himself dictator and the Texans did not like this. The Texans set up a fight and won their independence on April 21, 1836. The Mexican flag has an eagle, a snake, and cactus on bars of green, white, and red.

  9. Texas in the Confederacy1861-1865 • The American Civil War began sixteen years after Texas joined the U.S. Texas sided with the Confederate states. The final battle of the Civil War was won on Texas soil. Texans returned from the war to find a large amount of Longhorns, thereby starting the long cattle drives. The Confederate flag flown in Texas had stars and bars. www.txranger.com

  11. Texas as a Republic1836-1845 • The Texas Republic went through many problems, epidemics, money problems in deadly clashes with Mexico. During these almost ten years, the Texas Rangers were formed and the American cowboy was born. On December 29, 1845, Texas joined the United States. The Texas flag is red, white, and blue. It also has one lone star on it.

  13. Texas in the U.S.1845-1861;1865-Present • When Texas joined the U.S. it became the 28th star on the U.S. flag. Texas did well, the Texas Longhorn provided beef for the nation while the vast farmland produced plentiful crops. Oil was also discovered and industries began to use technology. Texas continues to thrive today.
