  1. New Experimental Method in Electrochemistry: A Proposal Based on Computer SimulationsPer Arne Rikvold, Florida State University, DMR 0240078 We propose a new experimental technique for analyzing the dynamical properties of phase transitions occurring during electrochemical adsorption experiments. The method is based on the First-order Reversal Curve (FORC) method, previously developed for analyzing hysteresis in magnetic systems. In the electrochemical context, it consists in cycling the electrode potential, while steadily decreasing the negative return potential. This gives rise to a family of FORCs, from which a FORC distribution is obtained by differentiation. Among the aspects of the dynamics that can be inferred from the FORC distribution is the order of the phase transition: Only discontinuous transitions give negative values. FORC data for a model of underpotential dposition of a metal, which has a discontinuous phase transition. Characteristic features are the back-bending “van der Waals loop” in the family of FORCs representing the coverage (a), the local minima in the corresponding voltammetric current densities (b), and the negative region in the FORC distribution (c). Robb) were partially supported by this grant. Abou Hamad earned his Ph.D. in Physics and is currently a postdoc at Mississippi State University. International: One female professor from Venezuela spends regular summer visits in the PI’s group. Outreach: With former graduate student Steven J. Mitchell (now with BP R&D) and current graduate students Juwono, Sevim, and Thompson, Rikvold experiments with LEGO construction and robotics toys in elementary and middle-school education. He maintains the general-interest web site: http://www.physics.fsu.edu/users/rikvold/info/legostuff.html Two middle-school students from Tallahassee’s School of Arts and Sciences are programming their LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot Tribot.
