  2. What the Research says about using ICT in History • ‘ICT helps pupils learning in history by providing quick and effective access to large quantities of information. It can help them to investigate, organise, edit and present information in many different ways.   3. The Rose Report and ICT - What does it mean for us? Rose (2009) states that one of the key features of the new primary curriculum is to: ‘strengthen the teaching and learning of information and communication technology (ICT) to enable children to be independent and confident users of technology by the end of primary education’ (Rose, 2009: p.11).

Aims for this unit The aims for this unit are, to: • Develop an understanding of how people used to live • Become creative and imaginative thinkers • Discover how our lives have been shaped by the actions of people in the past • Develop knowledge and understanding of different ICT programmes and how these can be used in other subjects • Develop a range of ICT skills

  5. What will children be learning in the context of history? History: beginning of term • Place events, people and changes into periods of time and construct their own Celt and Roman timeline; • Discover how Rome was founded and how the empire expanded; • Find out about the Roman army and what life was like as a soldier – Roman Army week • Learn about why the Romans invaded Britain and how they achieved this • Look at the Celts who lived in Britain and their resistance to the Roman invasion End of half term – off-site visit to Bignor Roman Villa History: after half term • Discover what life was like in Roman Britain and what changes they made to the country • Learn about Roman lifestyle, including housing (villas), food and drink, entertainment and legacy KS2 History - NC PoS 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 3, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 5c, 8a, 9

  6. What will children be learning in the context of ICT? ICT- beginning of term • Exploration of interactive websites to discover information about Romans • Simulations – Children will begin to understand that computer simulations can represent real and imaginary situations, just like stories. Several Celtic simulations will be explored to help the children learn more about them ICT - after half term Exploration of combining text and graphics to communicate information • Presentation – using moviemaker the children will practise combining text, still and moving images, and sound to create a multimedia presentation • creation of a Roman Villa information leaflet for a Roman estate agent; NC PoS 1a, 1c, 3a, 4a, 4c

Assessment Opportunities To facilitate learning in ICT teachers need to: • Make learning objectives and success criteria explicit; • Provide opportunities and time for exploration in ICT; • Closely observe the children at work; • Interaction and questioning – while the children are working; • Allow sufficient thinking time before obtaining an answer; • Provide self and peer assessment opportunities; • Provide effective feedback; Analysing learning is only the first step towards finding out what children know and can do, but this assessment only ‘becomes formative assessment when the evidence is […] used to adapt the teaching work to meet the needs’ of the children (Black and Wiliam, 2001: p.2).

Useful sites • http://www.brims.co.uk/romans/ This is an interactive, fun site for 7-10 year olds about the Romans and especially the Romans in Britain. • http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/romans/ • http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/nettsch/time/romans.html Excellent School website with a wealth of information about life in Roman Times – highly recommended. • http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/celts/ Fantastic site that is for use both at school and at home and is aimed primarily at KS2 children, their teachers and parents. The emphasis is on facilitating experiential learning to help children enter the world of the Iron Age Celts at their level of understanding, in line with the National Curriculum. • http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ks2history.html There are 5 Key Stage 2 History interactive resources for Primary Schools, and for parents & children to use at home with a PC or Mac. • http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/ Great site -This has lots of short video clips (that can be used in the classroom) across all subjects including 6 languages and a range of topics.
