Exercise in Persuasion • 40 minutes to write • ACT provides 3 perspectives on the issue • You are to evaluate and analyze the 3 perspectives • You can state and or develop your own perspective • Explain the relationship between your chosen perspective and at least one of the other perspectives • Develop your ideas with sound reasoning and examples • Organize your ideas clearly and logically • Use standard written English

  3. How scored • 2 trained readers will read your essay • Each reader gives you a 1-6 score in each domain • Ideas and Analysis • Clear main idea, show understanding of issue, write about each perspective and relationship to own • Development and Support • Explaining your reasoning, use persuasive examples, why worth considering • Organization • Organized to show relationship between ideas and guide the reader through your discussion • Language Use • Use English to convey ideas, grammar, word choice, and mechanics. Right style and tone • The 2 scores from each domain are added together (2-12)

  4. General guidelines • Read the prompt and the 3 perspectives very carefully • Use transitions throughout your paper • Write Legibly • Don’t skip lines

  5. Plan of action • Plan your essay-Brainstorm (5 Minutes) • Choose your perspective-either 1 of the 3 given or your own • Notes on all 3 perspectives • Notes on your perspective (if different) • Organize your thoughts (3 minute) • Write your introduction paragraph (5 minutes)-2-3 sentences • Write your body of your essay (20 minutes) • Write your conclusion (5 minutes) • Re-read your essay looking for errors (2 Minutes)
