  1. Spring 2012 Internship: Texas A&M Women’s BasketballBy Blake Lock

  2. Site Contact Information • Texas A&M Women’s Basketball Main Phone: (979) 862-3218 • Erich Birch, Director of Operations Phone: (979) 862-1636

  3. Site Ranking • I give this internship site 4 out of 5 stars. • While no internship is perfect, this one showed me what kind of work it takes to make it in Division I college athletics. I have a new appreciation for the business side of sports and how much effort it takes to put on a sporting. • Between scheduling travel itinerary for road trips, helping prepare for luncheons and banquets, and planning for Coach Blair’s annual golf tournament; I feel like I have gained a tremendous amount of experience that will help me find future employment.

  4. Words of Wisdom • At times, you may find that you have run out of things to do around the office. My suggestion is to ask other people around you if they need assistance besides just your supervisor. This will open you up to new experiences and will prove to your boss that you can be useful in more ways than one. • If you don’t understand something always ask questions, never assume anything. You’re boss would much rather you double or triple-check with him on a task and get it right, then do it once and get it wrong. • At times this internship will require a lot of hours out of you (depending or not if you work during the season), always try and get as much sleep as you can and don’t stay out to late on weeknights.

  5. List of Internship Objectives • Assist in the day to day operations with the women’s basketball team. Duties include: Updating goal boards after games, preparing travel itinerary for road games, and assisting with gameday operations. • Help prepare for the 2012 Coach Blair Charity Golf Tournament. Duties include: Updating database with list of sponsors for the event, assist in picking out photos for the brochure, and handing those out to local golf courses and sporting goods stores, communicating with committee members and sponsors, and finally working the event itself. • To help prepare for and work with special team functions such as Coach Blair luncheons, the Texas A&M Women’s Basketball Reunion, Parent’s Weekend, and Senior Day

  6. Summary of Daily Activities On a given day after a game, I would get the stat sheet from Erich and head downstairs to update the goal boards. After that if we had a luncheon that day, I would print out golf tournament brochures and flyers for the Italy trip this summer on the tables. Before the luncheon, I would run over to the 12th Man Productions Office to grab the highlight video that would be played for everyone. During the luncheon, I would monitor the sound system to make sure everyone could hear the speaker’s microphone. When the luncheon was over, I would help clean up and then go back upstairs to my office where there usually were some checks for Coach Blair’s Golf Tournament that I would need to enter into our spreadsheets and then give to Erich. After that, I might be working on the travel itinerary for the next road game, by getting the hotel and airport information as well as printing off maps for the bus driver to see where he needed to go. With that finished, I might help the summer camp intern fold and stuff letters for envelopes that needed to be mailed to high schools all over the southwest advertising our summer camps for girls grades 7-12. I may not have gotten around to all of those tasks in a single day, but most days I always had these sort of tasks to keep me occupied until five o’clock.

  7. Project Description Summary • The Coach Blair Charity Golf Tournament is a celebrity golf tournament that benefits the Special Olympics and other small charities. Teams are made up of donors from local businesses or individuals in Bryan/College Station and the surrounding communities. These donors can either give by becoming a hole sponsor, or medal sponsor depending on the amount they choose to give to Coach Blair Charities. The tournament itself prepares four individuals with a celebrity athlete or coach together for a round of golf at the Traditions Course in Bryan. In addition to the tournament, three is also a celebration dinner the night before along with a live and silent auction. My job is to help secure sponsorships and help keep track of the money given by each business or individual. In addition, I will also be working at the golf tournament and the auctions as well.
