  1. Challenging 2nd law problems Additional reading assignment

  2. Challenge #1 • An 178 lb person escapes from a burning building by jumping from a window situated 30 m above a net. Assuming air resistance exerts a 100 N force on the person as he falls, determine his velocity just before he hits the net.

  3. Challenge #2 • A train has a mass of 5.22x106 kg and is moving 90 km/h. The engineer applies the brakes, which results in the net backward force of 1.87X106 N on the train. The brakes are held on for 30s. • What is the new speed of the train? • How far does it travel during the time of braking?

  4. Challenge #3 • A 2.0 kg mass starts from rest and slides down and inclined plane 80 cm long in 0.50 s. What net force is acting on the mass along the incline?

  5. Challenge #4 • The parachute on a race car of weight 8820 N opens at the end of a quarter mile run when the car is traveling at 35 m/s. What total retarding force must be supplied by the parachute to stop the car in a distance of 1000 m?

  6. Challenge #5 • A 5.0 kg bucket of water is raised from a well by a rope. If the upward acceleration of the bucket is 3.0 m/s2, find the force exerted by the rope on the bucket.
