  4. BROWN COUNTY • Largely rural communities • Hospital is the largest employer in the county. • County is the largest tobacco producer in the state • Ripley Ohio 20 minutes away • Ohio Tobacco Museum • Annual Tobacco Festival • Smoke Free Ohio - Failed

  6. ORGANIZING TOBACCO FREE TASK FORCE Team initiated July 2006 Membership – smokers & non-smokers • Administration (CEO/CNO) • Physicians • Physician Practices • Marketing • Ancillary Departments • Social Worker • Educators • Security • Environmental Services • Emergency • All Clinical Units

  8. STRUCTURE – 5 TEAMS • Patient • Employee • Communications/Public Relations • Policy • Education

PATIENT TEAM Purpose: To assure our patients are supported through their nicotine addiction to be able to comply with Tobacco Free Campus Policy • Letter to patients by Physician Co-Chairs • Nicotine Replacement Therapy order set • Chantix • Education for Physicians • Physician Practices, pathway • Packets of information for our patients who want to stop • Signs on patient room doors • Team to visit patients to discuss options/support

PATIENT TEAM Purpose: To assure our patients are supported through their nicotine addiction to be able to comply with Tobacco Free Campus Policy • Training for staff – what/how to ask • Added questions to nursing assessment • Have you tried quitting before? • What worked, what were your challenges? • Would you like to try again? • Discussion w/patient how we support them through their stay • Pre-natal classes • Pre-Anesthesia testing and patient education

EMPLOYEE TEAM Purpose: To assure staff are supported in complying with new Tobacco Free Campus policy • Ohio Quit Line • 8 weeks low cost Nicotine Replacement Therapy • Wellness survey • Offered YWCA Instructors on site • Smoking Cessation Classes • 5 between August and January 1 • Offered information on all community resources • Staff attending had an opportunity to earn vacation day • Pharmacy • Nicotine Replacement Therapy available at cost

COMMUNICATIONS/PUBLIC RELATIONS TEAM • Staff Newsletter Monthly • Press Plan • Advertise smoking cessation classes • Article regarding new policy • Testimonials about success of cessation classes • Posters • Speakers at community/service clubs • Kiwanis & Lions Club • Booth at Fair • Education regarding new policy • Give aways – stop smoking theme Purpose: Educate the public and staff on our new Tobacco Free Campus policy and purpose.

POLICY TEAM Purpose: Review, Revise and develop all policies necessary to support Tobacco Free Campus Initiative • Revised and Developed Policies • Signage • At all entrances, waiting areas, offsite areas • Countdown to January 1 • Temporary signage • Permanent signage, GCHC • Table Tents • Before and after January 1 • Placed throughout the organization

  14. EDUCATION TEAM Purpose: To assure employees understand the Tobacco Free policy. Provide resources and strategies for employees to use whenever they encounter a patient, visitor or employee violating policy • Scripting • non confrontational • FAQ in paychecks • Cards to hand out • Table Tents • Brochures/Posters

  16. CELEBRATION • February – Recognized all staff • Posters recognizing job well done • Special lunch for all staff • Gourmet cookies for all departments
