  1. Health and Safety in Construction Project Management

  2. Introduction Construction projects require the efficient implementation of men, machine, material, and methods according to the British Standards of project management. Manpower is the most important asset. It requires skill, training, and experience. Machines require technology and accessories. Materials require quality and applicability to a given project. Methods are the means through which the three parameters are implemented in the project.

  3. Safety Management – Primary Task of Managers Safety is the most important part of every construction project. It means personnel have to be protected from every form of personal injury, exposure to toxic elements, and accidental impacts from the moving parts. It also means protection from any accidental slip and fall. Safety gear and equipment play an important role in protecting personnel from injuries and possible death. Protection of head and body can be done with the help of helmets, breathing filters, gas masks, ear-protection gear, and overall body gear and safety uniforms.

  4. Personnel working on construction projects may not be aware of the safety standards. Hence, training plays an important part in preparing them for wearing safety gears and uniforms. An average training period could be somewhere between 15 days to 30 days. It covers all the aspects of theory and practice. Once the personnel are prepared to handle the security management, they will always remain alert and away from all the potential risks involved in the construction projects. It is the stage in which the primary objective of construction project planning is achieved.

  5. Machine Safety – Steps to Achieve Success Machine safety involves quality parts and the prevention of breakdown. Periodical and preventive maintenance can help to achieve this objective. Any broken or unusable parts have to be immediately replaced. Refurbishing of old machines should be done according to the British Standards. No loose or worn-out parts should be used in the machinery, regardless of how small or how big they are. Lubrication of moving parts within the construction machines is the most important task for achieving and sustaining safety standards. Lubrication also allows free movement of parts and free flow of materials through the machines.

  6. Material Safety-Critical Factor for Project Completion The construction management procurement of materials has to be from an authenticated and licensed supplier. Evaluation of suppliers involves safety, quality, punctuality, and conformance to British Standards (BS) in following the safety from fire, slip and fall, and other standards. The materials used in constructions are mainly concrete, colouring additives, paint, fuel, thinners, bricks, stones, tiles, granite, etc. Evaluation of material quality and safety has to be done by a qualified engineer who follows the BS for construction project management.

  7. Methods Safety – Previous Track Record Matters The methods used in the projects should be documented and verified with the previous track records. It is the best way of ensuring method safety.

  8. Conclusion Adopting these standards can ensure the success of construction project management in all the aspects of principle and practice.
